Seasons
The fishing year at Tropic Star Lodge is a dynamic affair, dictated by the ocean's rhythms and the species that grace its waters. From January through February, the lodge enters its prime for Black Marlin, with these leviathans congregating on the legendary Zane Grey Reef. This period also offers exceptional opportunities for Blue Marlin and large Sailfish, often exceeding 100 pounds, offshore. The Dorado are equally impressive, frequently reaching 50-60 pounds, and Yellowfin Tuna in the 100-250 pound class are common. While seas can be choppy due to the north trade winds, the potential for a Grand Slam is at its peak. March through May marks a significant shift, transitioning into the Inshore Season. This period is renowned for its explosive action on species like Roosterfish, which can exceed 70 pounds, alongside powerful Cubera Snappers and Grouper. As colder waters move inshore, baitfish become abundant, fueling these predatory species. April sees school-sized Yellowfin Tuna (20-60 pounds) invading coastal waters, and while billfishing is more sporadic, the seas are typically flat and calm, making it ideal for concentrating on the inshore bounty. May is particularly notable for the lodge's annual Roosterfish tournament, drawing anglers specifically for the incredible numbers of these iconic gamefish. June through September, with a resurgence in December, ushers in the Blue Marlin and Sailfish season. June and July are prime months for multiple Sailfish hookups, often with double headers, and are also excellent for big Roosterfish. July and August are peak months for Black and Blue Marlin, with Grand Slams remaining a strong possibility. Giant Dorado in the 50-pound class are prevalent, and Yellowfin Tuna feed in frenzies. September offers continued excellent offshore action for large Tuna and Dorado, with Wahoo fishing also at its best. December provides a great all-around fishing experience, with a mix of billfish, Tuna, and Dorado, and the occasional opportunity for large Roosterfish and Cubera Snappers inshore.
