Seasons
Montana Fly Fishing Lodge offers a full season of angling from late May through mid-October, with each period showcasing distinct hatches and fishing opportunities. The early season, from late May through June, is characterized by aggressive trout feeding on streamers as runoff subsides and the first major hatches, like salmonflies on the Yellowstone and Stillwater rivers, begin. This is a prime time for big bugs and big eats, with less pressure on the water. July and August mark the peak of the dry fly season across all rivers. Prolific hatches of PMDs, caddis, and terrestrials like hoppers dominate the scene, leading to warm days and long evenings with fish actively looking up. This is the heart of the Montana summer fishing experience. September and October usher in the fall trophy season. As the landscape transforms with autumn colors and temperatures cool, the focus shifts to larger, pre-spawn trout that are actively feeding. Streamer fishing becomes particularly effective, and the rivers offer a sense of solitude that many guides consider the best time of year. The season concludes with excellent fishing in these shoulder months before the lodge closes.
