Sea Trout
Scientific Name: Salmo trutta morpha trutta | Category: anadromous
The sea trout is the anadromous, silvery cousin of the freshwater brown trout, returning from the ocean with a powerful, streamlined physique. In its prime marine-fed condition, it presents a torpedo-like body, brilliantly silvered flanks dotted with sparse, dark crosses or spots, and a distinctly forked tail—hallmarks of its life at sea. While inland trout may average two or three pounds, sea-run fish commonly reach 5 to 15 pounds, with true trophies pushing over 20 pounds, their size a direct testament to their rich saltwater diet. When freshly run, they gleam like chrome; as they linger in the river ahead of spawning, a more classic 'brown trout' coloration of olive and gold begins to bleed back through the silver, and the lower jaw of larger males may develop a pronounced kype.
