Scamp Grouper

Scientific Name: | Category: saltwater

The scamp grouper is a study in elegant camouflage, a lithe and subtly beautiful predator. Unlike many of its more barrel-chested grouper cousins, the scamp boasts a more streamlined, almost bass-like profile with a distinctly concave tail fin. Its base color is a dusky gray to brown, overlaid with a chaotic, beautiful pattern of irregular darker brown and golden-yellow blotches and spots, which often merge into vertical bars along its sides. Reaching weights of up to 30 pounds, though more commonly encountered in the 5- to 15-pound range, it is easily identified by the elongated third dorsal spine and the distinctive yellow coloration inside its mouth. Anglers will note its powerful, dogged pull, often punctuated by a sudden dive for the nearest structure.

"appearance": "A sleek, bass-like predator with a streamlined, elongated body compared to other groupers. Base coloration is a variable dusky gray to brown, overlaid with a complex, irregular mosaic of dark reddish-brown to blackish blotches and spots, interspersed with brighter golden-yellow to bronze flecks and markings. These patterns often coalesce into 8-10 faint, irregular vertical bars along the flanks. The head is elongated with a large mouth. The third dorsal spine is notably elongated. The interior of the mouth and gill chamber is a vivid, diagnostic lemon-yellow to chartreuse-yellow. Fins are dusky, often with dark margins. Adults typically range from 10 to 30 inches in length, weighing 5 to 30 pounds.",
