Kob

Scientific Name: Argyrosomus japonicus | Category: saltwater

A formidable silver hunter of the murky depths, the kob is instantly recognizable by its muscular, torpedo-shaped body, built for explosive bursts of speed. Typically encountered between 50 and 100 cm, trophy specimens can stretch well over a meter and tip the scales at more than 50 kilograms. Its distinctive features include a slightly protruding lower jaw, a series of small, sharp teeth, and a base coloration of silver to bronze that fades to a pearlescent white belly. A key identification mark, especially in the water, is the dark, smudged spot at the base of the pectoral fin. For the angler, a heavy headshake and bulldogging fight telegraph its identity long before it breaks the surface.
