A riverine predator of mythic, almost prehistoric, stature, the Huchen is the undisputed apex of European freshwater game fish. Its body is a long, powerful, perfectly hydrodynamic tube of iron-willed muscle, clad in smooth, small scales of a deep, burnished copper or bronze that transitions to a more silvery hue along the flanks and belly. Dark, X-shaped or crescent-shaped spots pepper its entire length, creating a distinct mottled camouflage. It is a giant among salmonids, routinely growing to lengths of three to four feet and weights of 30 to 50 pounds, with legendary specimens reported well over 80 pounds—trout-like in lineage but pike-like in its predatory intent. In the net or on the bank, its sheer mass, formidable gape filled with sharp teeth, and deep, thickset shoulders telegraph pure power.
