Seasons

The fishing season at Country Haven Lodge & Cottages spans from mid-April to mid-October, offering a generous six-month window for anglers to pursue the legendary Wild Atlantic Salmon on the Miramichi River. The season kicks off with the Spring Salmon run from April 15th to May 15th, a prime time when salmon are actively feeding and abundant in the river. During this period, guides typically utilize sinking lines or sinking tips in April, transitioning to larger streamer flies in May, with floating lines also employed depending on conditions. As summer transitions into fall, from May 16th to October 15th, the fishing shifts to wading, though boat fishing remains an option. This extended summer and fall season is characterized by fresh salmon entering the system from the sea, not feeding but striking out of instinct, with salmon over 30 lbs landed annually. The lodge's access to numerous private pools on the Main Southwest Miramichi and its tributaries, including the Cains River, is a significant advantage, providing anglers with prime water and maximizing success rates. Beyond the renowned Atlantic Salmon, Country Haven also offers excellent opportunities for other species throughout the season. Trout fishing is particularly productive from May 1st to early July, with May often best fished from boats using sinking tip streamer flies in faster water, while the Cains River is prime from June into early July for dry fly enthusiasts. Trout up to 4-5 lbs are commonly caught. Striped Bass fishing is also excellent, available from May 1st to October 15th, with mid-May onward being ideal for targeting them in the lower, tidal stretches of the system, often with dry flies. For a specific, exciting run, the American Shad make their appearance in June, offering fantastic fly-fishing action with double-digit catches common throughout the month.
