"descriptionShort": "Missoula sits where two major trout rivers converge in western Montana. The Clark Fork and Blackfoot offer year-round dry-fly and streamer fishing within minutes of town.",
"descriptionLong": "Missoula is a working river town where the Clark Fork and Blackfoot meet, creating a hub for anglers who want serious trout water without isolation. The Clark Fork runs through town itself—a freestone river that drops from the high country around Anaconda and picks up volume as it flows west. The lower Clark Fork around Missoula holds solid populations of cutthroat and westslope cutthroat, with brown trout becoming more common downstream. Summer and fall dry-fly fishing is reliable on mayfly and caddis hatches; winter brings streamer opportunities when flows stabilize. The Blackfoot, which joins the Clark Fork just north of town, is equally productive and slightly more remote—a classic freestone with excellent spring and early-summer runoff fishing, then consistent summer dry-fly action on smaller flies. Both rivers run clear enough for sight fishing when conditions cooperate, and both respond well to standard western techniques: small dries, soft hackles, and streamers in the 3-5 inch range. Rock Creek, a tributary system southeast of town, offers smaller-water technical fishing and is home to several lodges and guide services. The Missoula area sits at roughly 3,200 feet elevation, so winters are manageable and spring runoff typically peaks in May-June. Access is straightforward—multiple public takeouts and pullouts line both rivers, and the town itself provides restaurants, gear shops, and lodging options beyond traditional fishing lodges. This is not a remote destination; it's a place where you can fish hard water in the morning and have a real dinner in town by evening.",
