"descriptionShort": "The southernmost Florida Keys island offers shallow-water sight-casting for permit, tarpon, and bonefish in gin-clear flats, plus deep-water action for grouper and snapper within minutes of the dock.",
"descriptionLong": "Key West sits at the tip of the Florida Keys archipelago, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Gulf of Mexico across shallow limestone flats and deeper channels carved by tidal exchange. The island's fishing splits cleanly between two worlds: the backcountry flats surrounding the keys hold permit, tarpon, and bonefish in water so clear that sight-casting is the dominant technique, while the deeper waters beyond the reef edge drop quickly to 600 feet, offering year-round access to grouper, snapper, and pelagics like kingfish and wahoo. The permit fishing here is among the most technical in the country—these fish are spooky and selective, requiring precise presentations and often multiple casts before a take. Tarpon season peaks in spring and early summer, when large schools move through the channels and into the shallows at dawn. Bonefish are present year-round on the flats, particularly in winter when cooler water pushes them into the shallows. The reef and wreck fishing is more forgiving and productive in summer months, when calm seas allow boats to reach the offshore structure. Most charters depart from the main harbor in downtown Key West, putting anglers on the water within minutes. The flats themselves—particularly around Marquesas Keys and the shallow banks west of Key West—are accessible only by shallow-draft skiff, and guides here are expert at reading water and spotting tails. Winter brings cooler temperatures and clearer water but also more crowded flats; summer offers solitude and warmer conditions, though afternoon thunderstorms are common. The island's infrastructure is unmatched in the Keys, with restaurants, accommodations, and tackle shops within walking distance of the docks.",
