"descriptionShort": "Shallow mangrove creeks and flats in South Florida's Everglades system hold permit, tarpon, and bonefish year-round. Sight-fishing in gin-clear water demands precision casting and patience.",
"descriptionLong": "The Everglades and Florida Keys form a unique saltwater fishery where mangrove-lined creeks, seagrass flats, and deeper channels create distinct habitats within a few miles of each other. This is sight-fishing country: you'll pole or drift through water so clear you can spot tailing permit and cruising tarpon from 50 feet away. The ecosystem spans from the shallow backcountry bays west of the Keys—where water depths rarely exceed six feet—to the deeper channels and reef edges that drop off toward the Gulf Stream.\n\nPermit are the signature quarry here, particularly on the flats surrounding the Keys and in the shallow bays of the Ten Thousand Islands region to the north. Bonefish school predictably on the same flats, especially during winter months when cooler water pushes them into shallower feeding zones. Tarpon—ranging from juveniles in the creeks to 100-plus-pound fish in the deeper channels—are present year-round but peak in spring and early summer. Snook, redfish, and large barracuda round out the mix.\n\nThe technique is almost exclusively fly and light tackle, with an emphasis on accurate casting to individual fish rather than blind casting. A typical day involves poling the flats at dawn, glassing for nervous water and tailing fish, then executing precise presentations from 30 to 60 feet away. The water's clarity means fish spook easily; poor casting or a drag-inducing approach will cost you shots. Guides here are expert at reading the subtle signs—a slight color change, a nervous wake, the flash of a tail—that reveal feeding fish.\n\nWater levels and visibility fluctuate seasonally. Winter (December through March) brings the clearest water and most stable conditions, though temperatures drop and fish move deeper. Summer and fall see higher water levels, warmer temperatures, and more variable visibility, but also larger concentrations of tarpon and permit. The region's shallow, protected waters make it accessible to anglers of varying skill levels, though landing a permit on fly remains one of saltwater fishing's most demanding challenges.",
