The Essex River system is a classic New England estuary—shallow, productive flats interspersed with rocky outcrops, marsh channels, and deeper holes that concentrate fish on the tide change. Striped bass are the primary target, with fish ranging from schoolies to 40-plus-pound cows that move through on spring and fall migrations. Bluefish and bonito arrive in summer and early fall, and the flats hold false albacore during peak season. The fishing is tidal and technical. Low water exposes sand and mud flats where bass hunt baitfish in the shallows; high tide pushes them into channels and around structure. Most anglers work the flats on foot or from a skiff, sight-casting to cruising fish or stripping flies and small topwaters along drop-offs. The Essex River proper is narrow and intimate—nothing like the open-water striped bass fishery of Cape Cod or Martha's Vineyard—which means you're reading individual fish and their behavior rather than casting to pods. The season runs strong from May through October, with June and September typically the most consistent.
