Charleston's fishing scene with RedFin Charters offers a year-round experience, though the species and techniques shift with the seasons. From January through March, the cooler months bring redfish to the shallow mudflats and creeks, often schooling in large numbers, providing excellent sight-fishing opportunities. This is also a prime time for targeting sheepshead, black drum, and redfish on nearshore wrecks. As spring arrives in April and May, slot redfish become more aggressive in the shallows, while larger bull reds move into the harbor and off the beaches. Speckled sea trout are also abundant, especially during their spawning season. May and June see cobia entering the waters, and larger sharks, including spinners, hammerheads, and bulls, become more active in the harbor and nearshore reefs. Spadefish also make their appearance nearshore. Summer, from July through September, brings warmer waters, shifting the focus to larger redfish in the harbor preparing to breed, often exceeding 30 pounds. This period also offers opportunities for various shark species, large flounder, and trout. Tarpon begin their migration through the local waters in July, and Spanish mackerel, bluefish, ladyfish, and jack crevalle are also present. September marks a transition with cooler mornings, increased creek fishing productivity, and the start of the mullet run, which attracts tarpon to condensed bait pods. October through December offers a fantastic transition into fall and winter. The bait is plentiful, and fish are actively feeding. Slot redfish are aggressive in the creeks, and trout fishing improves significantly, with sheepshead and flounder also being popular targets. As winter sets in, redfish form large schools on mudflats and oyster beds, ideal for sight fishing, while trout school up near structure. Nearshore wrecks continue to hold sheepshead, black drum, and redfish.
