Orca Island Cabins operates from May 5th to September 20th, offering a prime window for experiencing Alaska's rich marine life and fishing opportunities. During this period, the waters of Resurrection Bay and Humpy Cove teem with activity. From May through September, anglers can target a variety of bottom fish, including rockfish, flounder, and sea bass. The true highlight for many, however, is the salmon run. July and August are particularly exciting months, as both pink (Humpy) and silver (Coho) salmon make their way into the local waters and nearby streams, providing excellent sport fishing. While the lodge focuses on a more immersive wilderness experience, they do offer fishing gear and access to rowboats for guests to enjoy casual fishing from the dock or explore nearby salmon streams, including one that leads to a waterfall. Beyond fishing, the season is defined by abundant wildlife viewing. Humpback whales migrate into the area in May and remain through September, while Orca whales are present year-round. Guests can frequently spot harbor seals, sea otters, river otters, and Steller sea lions. Birdlife is also prolific, with bald eagles, cormorants, and various seabirds common. The protected waters of Humpy Cove are ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkeling, allowing guests to explore the coastline and observe marine life up close. Hiking trails, including a World War II jeep trail and a path to a waterfall, offer opportunities to explore the island's interior and enjoy panoramic views.
